Staff

Team. There are few things more satisfying in life than joining others in a common dream and direction. One look at our staff will tell you that we are a diverse group; we all have different roles, gifts, and experiences. Some of us work behind the scenes and others are up front on a regular basis, but we’re enjoying sharing life and ministry together.

At North Shore Alliance, we have an amazing staff team that is committed to one another, to following where Jesus leads, and to seeking God’s kingdom for the North Shore. Along the way, our team laughs a lot, prays a lot, and loves the opportunity to serve our community.

  What I do? I get to spiritually disciple and shepherd youth and their leaders.

  How long have I been at NSA? Since way back in September 2011.

  One thing most people don't know about me: I actually have a second-degree black belt in TaeKwonDo.

  A few of my favourite things are: The smell of rain as it hits the hot pavement; Sitting on a couch with a blanket; When good songs break into violin, cello, or French horn; Watching films; Driving through giant puddles; The top of the muffin; Miniature ponies; Watching World Cup football.

  What I Do: As the Front Office Administrative Assistant I provide support and assistance to NSAC staff, volunteers and our congregation. Basically, I keep track what is going on at our church and then I make sure everyone knows about it.

  How long have I been at NSA? I joined the team in January 2010, so I am still pretty new to the staff but I feel right at home. I know God placed His loving hands on me and led me to this church.

  One thing most people don't know about me: I have been to Tikal, Guatemala not as a missionary, maybe God has a plan for that later.

  A few of my favourite things: cooking dinner for my son Brooks, reading mystery novels, hiking, enjoying the sunsets God creates and living on the North Shore.

  What I do:  I am the Youth Pastor.  So.... I guess that means I pastor youth... oh... and I love to introduce young people to a dear friend who gave his life for us so that we could all experience real life and freedom. 

  How long have I been at NSA?  I've been serving the youth group as a ministry partner with YFC / Youth Unlimited since 2001.  This is my 4th year as the youth pastor, and I love it!

  One thing most people don't know about me:  I used to rock the accordion but secretly, I wish I could play the drums.

  A few of my favourite things: I generally like breathing.... it feels so good.  Doing life with my wife, Sherri, and my boys, Lucas and Sylas, is the best.  I enjoy snowboarding, skateboarding, reading, coffee shop conversations, BBQing a good steak, and hanging out with my neighbors.

  What I do:  I'm a part of the NSA financial team that keeps the books in order and the bills paid.

  How long I have been here:  I attended NSA for a little over a year before I came on staff in 2007.

  One thing most people don't know about me:  I grew up a preacher's daughter.

  A few of my favourite things:  I love to be creative.  As a child I loved to create things from cereal boxes and paper scraps.  Over the years I have tried my hand at many crafts and these days I love cardmaking and scrapbooking to creating a useful form for work.  I also love to read and study.

  What I Do: My role includes administrative, graphic design, and communications support for the pre-teen, youth, and young adult ministries. I love working alongside our awesome team of pastors, coordinators, and interns to share God's love with the students in our community.

  How long have I been at NSA? I've been serving as the Student Ministries Admin. Assistant since December 2006. Prior to my employment at NSA, I attended ASAP (former young adult evening service) a few times over the years while attending Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Richmond.

  One thing most people don't know about me: I am an expert at assembling IKEA furniture.

  A few of my favourite things: enjoying the outdoors with my husband Matt: running, hiking & biking the North Shore trails or hanging out down by the waterfront. I also love singing, painting, photography, movies, and engaging in anything design-related.

  One thing most people don't know about me: I'd love to write a book some day.

  A few of my favourite things: spending time with my wife (Naomi) and kids (Luke and Anna), sunshine, shorts and t-shirts, soccer, tennis, running until the point of nausea, and reading a good book.

  What I do: Most of my time is spent planning lessons and teaching kids about Jesus: He loves them and calls them His Kids! I also love supporting and partnering with parents as they introduce faith based truths in their homes. And I get to do all this with an incredible team of volunteers that I see God raise up and release to serve in ministry.

  How long have I been at NSA?I was hired by North Shore Alliance in September of 2006. And I starting attending North Shore the summer of 2004.

  One thing most people don't know about me: I love to cook.

  A few of my favourite things:Hanging out with friends, drinking coffee, walking in the rain, watching movies and buying shoes.

  What I do? I have the privilege of overseeing NSAC’s Student Ministries (Pre-Teen, Youth, & Young Adults) and giving leadership to our local and global missions.

  How long have I been at NSA? I have been at NSAC since 1997.

  One thing most people don't know about me: When I got married I had a mullet!

  A few of my favourite things are: My family, Canada, Jesus, soccer, and the Canucks.

  What I do: I help connect people to small groups and our church community and give practical support to NSA's adult ministries.

  How long have I been at NSA?. My family and I started attending NSAC in 2004 and I joined the staff in 2007

  One thing most people don't know about me: I like to garden, especially weeding the garden!

  A few of my favourite things: hanging out with Mike and the kids, being His daughter, walking a beach, deserts, reading a novel in the middle of the day, summer bonfires at the cottage, being really active (endorphins!), quilting.

  What I do: As I follow Jesus, I have the privilege of inviting others (primarily young adults) to do the same.  As such, my days are spent teaching, praying, challenging, sharing, laughing & crying with, and cheering on some really great people.  I love it!

  How long have I been at NSA? My wife Gina and I started attending NSA back in 2000 when we were students at Simon Fraser University.  I spent 7 years serving in our awesome Youth Ministry, before being hired on staff as the Young Adult Pastor in 2007. This truly is home for me.  

  One thing most people don't know about me: I wore a dress to my wedding.   

  A few of my favourite things: People have told me that I like hearing my own voice, so I guess I should include that one; eating pizza (I feel like a 12 year old kid saying this, but it's true); watching football; playing soccer; going to school (I have been called many names for this one); and perhaps my greatest joys in life come from my beautiful wife Gina and our two kids Sofia and Luca! 

Elders

From church to church, you’ll find significant differences in leadership style and structure. At North Shore Alliance, we have a highly empowered staff team that is led by a volunteer Board of Elders (BOE). The men and women who make up our BOE are committed followers of Jesus, with a deep love for our people and for the North Shore. Our elders are often involved on the front lines of ministry, and they also serve behind the scenes: discerning God’s direction for our church community, and coming alongside our pastoral staff.

  I was blessed to grow up in a loving Christian family and accepted Jesus as my saviour at an early age. The most significant event of my childhood was the death of my father when I was only 10 years old. I look back on that time now and am so thankful how Jesus walked with me through my teenage years and extended me lots of "pre-grace" by guiding me in my decisions during that time. When I was 18 I attended Capernwray Bible School in England which was another important step in my journey as a follower of Jesus. Through Capernwray, I met my wife and best friend Judith. We married in 1989 and have two daughters - Frances (Lyz to her friends) who is 15 and attends Handsworth and Rachel who is 12 and attends Braemar.

  I am trained as a Chartered Accountant and currently work as the Treasurer of a company headquartered in Vancouver. We have attended NSAC since 1993 and I have had the privilege of using my professional training to serve the church as Treasurer from 1999 to 2006 and again starting in 2008 when I rejoined the Elders Board. Serving in this way has been an enriching faith experience for me as I have seen God provide over and over again no matter what the circumstances.

  I grew up on the North Shore and became a Christian at age 24. I have been married to my wife Eileen for 37 years, and we have two married children, Lisa and Jayme. Last year we were blessed with our first grandchild Alex, son of Lisa and Nick. I served as a fire officer for 33 years, and have operated our own building development company for almost 40 years. I served on the board of elders from 1976-2001, and was asked to serve again starting in 2008. I thank God for his care and provision for us through the years.

  As a born and bred New Zealander, I was given the opportunity through work to immigrate to Canada in 2006, with Maree my wife, and my 12 year son Nik. For the last three years we have been blessed by the people of North Shore Alliance Church, who have become our second family where we knew no one, and had no prior relationships. It is here, at NSAC, that we have been called to serve and be served, and I feel honoured to be able to continue that in the role of Elder from 2009.

  Being raised in a home where God was at the periphery of our lives, I made a choice to go it alone without Him. However, through struggles I faced as a teen, and the powerful investment into my lives of a few Christian brothers, God met with me in a powerful and personal way when I was 15. Since then God has revealed himself to be a just, powerful, and healing God throughout my life, and I give Him all the praise for where he has brought me, and the blessings he has given me and my family.

  I long to see God's Spirit poured on NSAC, and believe in the power of prayer in bringing healing and salvation to our church family and beyond. It is my hope that I can support and encourage the body of Christ in my role as Elder, and look forward to the opportunity to see God working in all of us, unified in our Lord, Christ Jesus.

  My wife, Brenda, and I emigrated from South Africa in 1997. North Shore Alliance Church was the first church we attended, on recommendation of a friend. This church has become our spiritual home, where we have been baptised, where many of our friends are, and where we enjoy community. Brenda served on staff in an accounting role for six years. We have been involved with Alpha, co-led a Home Group with another couple for several years, and I was involved with the Missions Team for many years.

  I recently learnt about the OT Hebrew word "hinnainee", the word of the servant - which means - here I am - available - ready to serve - what may I do for you. This continues to be my prayer and attitude to God as I worship and serve Him here at NSAC.

  Bill Clinton's 1992 presidential campaign was summed up by "It's about the economy, stupid". Someone similarly summed up our Christian walk by "It's about making disciples" (Matt. 28:18-20). May we at NSAC continue to disciple AND be discipled, extending God's Kingdom on the North Shore AND to all shores.

  I've lived on the North Shore most of my life and I've believed in God as long as I can remember. I first heard the Gospel through Young Life in high school and my life took on a whole new meaning when I discovered that God loved me personally. I led a Young Life club and later a local church youth group and began to sense a call to pastoral ministry in my early 20's. After completing studies at Regent College I planted a Baptist church in Coquitlam and then entered the business world where I currently work in marketing and business development.

  In 1986 I married Christine, the love of my life, and we have three wonderful sons. Over the past few years I've coached their baseball and soccer teams and I recently got back into skiing to join them on the slopes.

  I'm excited about the tremendous opportunity we have as a church to touch lives for Christ and I can't wait to see how He will work through us as we follow Him.
